Dr. Milhorat and Dr. Royo in August 2004 at the Department of Neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
In August 2004, Dr. Royo visited Dr. Milhorat from the “Chiari Institute of New York” to transmit and exchange medical and scientific opinions on the treatment of the Section of the Filum Terminale (SFT), applied by Dr. Royo since the year 1993 to stop the evolution of Arnold Chiari I Syndrome, Idiopathic Syringomyelia and Idiopathic Scoliosis.
After this visit, Dr. Milhorat started to incorporate Dr. Royo´s idea and applying the treatment of the SFT to patients affected by Arnold Chiari I Syndrome and Tethered Cord Syndrome. In July 2009, Dr. Milhorat published in the “Surgical Neurology” magazine, the appliance of this treatment in more than 300 patients with excellent results, by means of a Lumbar Laminectomy with 4 hours of surgical time and one week of hospitalization. Compared to the minimal invasive surgical technique applied in our institute ICSEB, which only requires 40 surgical minutes and some hours of hospitalization. And the fees are a 20th part of what is charged in the United States.
